Minimum age to fly a drone in Spain according to AESA

← Back to the blog

AESA doesn't decide the minimum age for flying a drone in Spain on its own. The European drone regulation sets it. AESA is Spain's State Aviation Safety Agency, the body that oversees Spanish skies. EASA is its European counterpart. Spain is one of EASA's Member States, so the common rules apply here. So the short answer is this: the age that counts is the one set by that European regulation. The reliable place to read the exact figure is the AESA website, and you should check it before you take off.

Why a figure on its own isn't enough

Why not just give a number? Because a figure on its own, copied from any old page, may be out of date or may not fit your flight. Rules get revised. The details matter. A quiet flight over a meadow is nothing like filming near a crowded beach. The sensible thing is to go to the source and read it calmly.

Operator and remote pilot

One thing is clear, though, and it applies to everyone. All drone flights within EASA Member States must comply with that regulation, whatever the nationality of the person flying. The rules distinguish between two roles. The operator is whoever is responsible for the flight, either a person or a company. The remote pilot is whoever is at the controls. Often they are the same person. If you own a drone and fly it yourself, you normally fill both roles at once.

The same rule in Asturias and across Europe

This also means the place doesn't change the rule. Whether you fly in Gijón or anywhere else in Asturias, the rule is the same as in Madrid, in Seville or in any European country that is part of EASA. One rule for everyone. That makes things much easier.

If a youngster wants to fly

And what if the person who wants to fly is a son, a niece or a curious youngster? The question is the same, and so is the source. Check what AESA says about age and what it requires before the first flight. That way nobody gets a nasty surprise.

What to do now

What should you do now? Open the AESA website and look for the drones section. That's where you'll find the minimum age and what you need in order to fly. Read it without rushing, before you buy the drone or take it out to fly. If anything isn't clear, ask AESA directly. Better to ask a question than to leave a doubt up in the air.
