What details to have ready for your wedding photos

← Back to the blog

Before the photographer arrives, it's worth having the rings, the bouquet, the dress or suit, the shoes, the accessories, the perfume and the wedding invitations all gathered together. Everything in one place, in the same room where you'll be getting ready. Why the rush? While hair and make-up are being finished, the photographer starts with the details. If a cousin who hasn't arrived yet has the rings, and the invitations were left at another house, that time is lost looking for them. There are two more things to prepare. The first is what you'll wear while you get ready, before putting on the dress or suit, because that's what appears in the first photos. The second: if you're getting ready in a hotel, go and see the room in good time and don't let the hotel choose it for you. In Gijón, elsewhere in Asturias or outside Spain, the list is the same.

What 'getting ready' means

What gets photographed at that moment has a name: the preparations, or 'getting ready', as many photographers call it. These are the hours at home or at the hotel before the ceremony. It's the first step of the day, and many couples don't plan it at all. There are nerves, laughter, and family coming in and out of the room. Some mornings the house is full of friends and it feels like a party. Other times it's just the bride and her mother, in silence. Both work for the photos. Usually the photographer arrives while hair or make-up is still being finished, so that there are memories of that time too. That's why it matters to have a good make-up artist and a good hairdresser, because their work also shows in the photos. Then, at both the bride's house and the groom's, things begin with the objects: the rings, the bouquet, the dress and the shoes. If you'd like photos at both houses, ask whether there's a second photographer. If there isn't, you'll need to book more hours so that the groom's preparations are photographed too. And if you like, those minutes can also be used for some photos with the family and friends who are at the house. The clothes you wear before the dress or suit deserve a moment's thought. Comfortable, yes, but with some taste, because the first page of the album is you in those clothes.

What to do this week

So what now? This week, find a box or a bag and put everything that will be photographed into it. Decide who carries it and to which house. If you're getting ready in a hotel, talk about the room with whoever will be taking your photos before you book it. If you're thinking about photography and video for your wedding in Asturias, Evan & Natalia Simon work from Gijón with couples and with businesses. You can call them and tell them how you picture that morning.
