Do You Need a Second Photographer for a Big Wedding?

← Back to the blog

Not always. But at a big wedding, it often helps. An experienced photographer can cover a wedding reasonably well, but there is a clear limit: if they are here, they cannot be there. A second photographer is usually a good decision when the guest list is long, when you are getting ready in different places or when the day moves through several locations. Some photographers recommend one from 150 guests upwards. Others say that a wedding with fewer than 60 guests, held entirely in the same place, is better handled by a single person.

What a second photographer does

And what does that second person do? They reach the angles the lead photographer cannot cover. While one photographs the person walking up the aisle, the other captures the face of the one waiting. They catch the guests' reactions. And they act as a backup if something goes wrong. Zero risk does not exist, but with two photographers you will not be left without photos.

Two photographers are not always better

That said, two photographers do not automatically mean better photos. The advantage disappears if both stand in the same spot, duplicate every image or do not share a way of working. Nor is a wedding about photographing every single second. During an entrance, you do not need a camera pointed at each person the whole time. And if you are not used to cameras, you may end up far too aware that you are being photographed. The wedding should feel like a wedding, not a photo shoot.

Meet whoever is coming

That is why it is worth knowing who will come as the second photographer. A stable team is not the same as a different person at every wedding. Both options can work. Even so, the couple should meet whoever is coming and know how much experience the two photographers have together. Nor should the second photographer bring a style that does not belong, or images that do not fit with the rest of the coverage.

Look at complete weddings

Before asking how many people will photograph your wedding, there is something far more useful: look at complete weddings. Not just the best photos, but the whole day. If a photographer manages to tell the whole story working alone, a second person will probably not give you what you imagine.

How to decide

Already have a date and a venue? Start with the simple things. Think about how many guests are coming, whether you are getting ready in the same place and how many locations the day will take in. Then ask to see complete weddings and ask whether the team usually works together. If you are getting married in Asturias and would like an honest opinion, you can tell Evan & Natalia Simon, in Gijón, what your wedding will be like. They listen to how the day will unfold, with its spaces, its timings and its people, and tell you honestly whether one pair of eyes is enough or you need two, in photography and video.
