Castillo de San Cucao is a medieval tower in Llanera, Asturias, and one of the most atmospheric places in the region to get married. The castle hosts just one wedding a day, so the whole place belongs to the couple and their guests from the first welcome to the last dance. Dating from the 14th century, it is also known as La Torre de Valdés and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural of Asturias, an Asset of Cultural Interest. It stands among the medieval buildings of Llanera, alongside the palacio de Villanueva and the casa palacio de Villabona.

Where it is and how to get there

The castle sits in the countryside of San Cucao de Llanera, at Restaurante Castillo de San Cucao s/n, 33425 Llanera, Asturias. It is an easy place to reach, even at rush hour. Guests who prefer not to drive can enjoy the transport service the castle offers, and there is parking on site.

Ceremony, drinks reception and guest numbers

For the ceremony there are three settings to choose from. The first is the main garden, right in front of the castle, a beautiful spot for a civil wedding. The other two are under cover, and you will find them in the section on what happens if it rains. Afterwards the drinks reception is a welcome cocktail with views of the sunset and torches lighting the evening. The castle has banqueting halls, a terrace, a garden area, a marquee and a dance floor, so the day flows from one space to the next. The banquet is served to between 40 and 350 guests, which suits an intimate celebration just as well as a big one.

Food and prices

The castle prepares the food itself, in its own kitchen, with a team that works for that wedding alone. The cooking is traditional, typical of the region and international. There are menus for vegetarians, vegans, diabetics, people with high blood pressure, allergies and coeliacs, and every menu is adapted for guests with allergies or intolerances. The open bar is included. Menus run from about €145 to €250 per guest, and there is a promotion on at the moment.

If it rains

It rains in Asturias, and the castle is ready for it. The ceremony setting is chosen according to the weather forecast. If the day turns grey, there is the covered Italian marquee, with views of the main garden and the castle. The other option is a stone-and-timber room inside the castle, entered through the medieval tower, which makes a very romantic setting. The drinks reception has a covered area too, so the celebration can go on in comfort.

Spots for photographs

The castle is a joy to photograph. The grounds have well-kept gardens, plenty of greenery and open spaces that are perfect for a portrait session. At dusk the torches at the drinks reception bring a warm, golden light, and the grounds at night look magical. The medieval tower gives a beautiful stone backdrop, and the stone-and-timber room inside is lovely for indoor portraits.

Booking

The castle's website is castillodesancucao.com. With only one wedding a day, it is a lovely idea to choose your date early. The team guides and advises couples throughout the whole process and on the wedding day itself, and couples rate the castle 4.9 out of 5.
