Usually yes, but don't take it for granted. Many wedding photographers put it in writing in the contract you sign: the contract states that they have public liability insurance for any mishap on the day. If you can't find it there, ask. It's a simple question, and a good professional will answer it without any trouble. The photographer pays for this insurance themselves, not you. It protects their work and their equipment. So what is it, in plain terms? It's insurance that pays out if the photographer causes damage through a mistake, an accident or carelessness. The damage might be to a person or to property, to the couple or to any guest. Picture the dancing. Someone bumps into the photographer, the camera falls to the floor and breaks with all the wedding photos inside. Some of these policies also cover what is known as pure financial loss. In other words, a loss that doesn't come from harm to a person or an object. One example is compensation for losing the wedding photos. Not every policy includes it, so it's worth asking. They also cover work done away from the studio: in banqueting halls, churches or clients' homes. Those are exactly the places where weddings happen. Why does it matter so much? A photographer is self-employed. They work with very expensive equipment and almost always on location, among lots of people. They can suffer damage or cause it. Without insurance, they would have to pay for it out of their own pocket. The estate or venue has its own insurance if it is licensed, but that insurance belongs to the venue, not to the photographer. Finally, here's a detail that causes a lot of confusion. If the photographer doesn't turn up, that no longer falls under their public liability. That's what wedding cancellation insurance is for: it covers what you've paid to suppliers such as the caterer, the florist, the videographer or the photographer.

How to check your contract
So from here, the next step is a short one. Open your contract with your photographer and look for the word insurance. If it's there, ask what it covers: damage to people and property, and also the loss of the wedding photos. If it isn't there, write to them and ask exactly that. Ask them to put the answer in writing for you. If you're considering Evan & Natalia Simon for the photography and video of your wedding in Gijón or anywhere in Asturias, the question is the same. Take your time asking it, with no obligation. A short call clears everything up.
